Barry Boiler

Drypoint and relief in 3 colours  2 Proofs  no edition
Dimensions: Paper H 58cms x W 76cms, Image: H 48cms x 54cms Limited Edition of 10
Based on a photograph of a steam engine interior taken in 1968. Print made in an experimental course at Curwen Press

Rive Vezere 2013

Screen-print in 2 colours on Fabriano Tiepolo mould-made paper Limited Edition of 15.

An experiment in limited colour printing. The image is from a watercolour made in the 1980s. The River flows into the Dordogne, and surrounded by mountains, gave me a Cezanne like subject. The discipline of using such a limited range of colours was stimulating.  This version is a reworking of an earlier proof state.

Rive Vezere 2 2016

Screen-print in 8 colours on Somerset Satin White mould-made paper Limited Edition of 28.
Initially an experiment in limited colour printing and now developed into a more complex print. The image is from a watercolour made in the 1980s after a visit to the Lascaux Caves. The Vezere River flows into the Dordogne, and surrounded by mountains, gave me a Cezanne like subject. The print evolved during an exhibition at The Stamford Arts centre as a demonstration piece that then took on a life of its own

Devon Window c 1990

Screen-print in 5 colours on medium weight cartridge paper

Dimensions: Image: H 42cms x 28cms

An early experiment in water-based printing inks. A Devon farmhouse window

Skillman's Hill 1990

Screen-print in11 colours on Somerset White mould-made paper

Limited Edition of 20

This is a view from Skillman’s Hill, Southwold, across the estuary to Walberswick with fishermen’s sheds in the foreground. It is the last print edition I made using oil-based inks and took most of a year to complete.  I tried, for the first time to capture a feeling for weather in a print.

Tobacco Shed 2013

Screen-print in 2 colours on Fabriano Tiepolo mould-made paper

Dimensions:Paper H 15.5cms x W 9.5cms,Image: H 14cms x 8.5cms Limited Edition of 20

A small study made in the field in the Dordogne area. The Design for the print languished in a sketch book for many years and fell out as Open Studios 2012 was due to start. It was used as a demonstration piece and then editioned.

Murano Gothic 2013

Screen-print in 6 colours on BFK Rives mould-made paperDimensions: Paper H 33cms x W 33cms, Image: H 26.5cms x 25cms Limited Edition of 10

Murano Gothic is the first of a Venetian triptych. These beautiful windows were first noticed in 2005 and then revisited more recently with a serious camera and telephoto lens – but the old sagging blinds had been tidied away, so the original photograph was used. Colour has been added through the addition of torn paper to the photo stencils to create an effect somewhat like an image taken from an old manuscript.

After several years of making prints with local subject matter, a visit to Venice provided a refreshing contrast. The favourable weather and quality of the October light helped me to produce some satisfying photographic images. Some were taken specifically for this project (Murano Gothic) and others were happened upon through walking and canal tours. The second important decision was to produce some prints on a much smaller scale than I had done for some time

Sea Door 2013

Screen-print in 6 colours on BFK Rives Limited Edition of 10

‘Sea Door’ is the second part of a Venetian triptych.  Based on a photograph taken from across the Grand Canal, close to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the print features a bricked-in canal-level entrance to a grand palazzo. The low angled effect of the late afternoon sun enhances the ‘noble- rot’ of the stonework and woodwork. Technically the print is an amalgam of photographic and autographic mark making: producing contrasts of controlled and free colour areas.

Molo Gotico 2013

Screen-print in 7 colours on BFK Rives Limited Edition of 15

Molo Gotico (Gothic Jetty) is the third part of a Venetian triptych.  The original source material was gathered on a Sunday Morning boat trip through the back canals of Venice.  The wooden ‘former’ holding the gothic arch in place is the focus of the design but the revealed brickwork and distressed plaster and stonework give that feeling of ‘noble rot’ that John Piper so admired. The print is made through posterised photographic tones printed over colours that are hand painted and collaged onto screen and transparent positive.

Casa Guell 2018

Screenprint in 6 colours on Somerset Satin Limited Edition of 10

Paper size 76x56 cms, Image size 62x40 cms

This print is based on a photo-joiner made soon after a visit to Barcelona. Gaudi’s architecture impressed, none more so than the roof of Casa Guell, with its beautifully sculpted and decorated chimney pots. The artist’s feet feature in the foreground as a little tribute to David Hockney, who developed the notion of joiners in the early 1980s.

Lavoria 2014

Screen-print in 3 colours on BFK Rives mould-made paper
Dimensions: Paper H 25cms x W 33cms, Image: H 18.5cms x 24.5cms Limited Edition of 15
This print started out as a sketchbook drawing made, on holiday, in Tuscany. On an afternoon walk we discovered an old communal village-washing place. It comprised a large concrete trough and the strange object seen in the foreground (as yet unidentified). Technically, the print is an exercise in creating rich sepia tones from 3 overlaid transparent colours. An original drawing on acetate was made from the sketch and separated into tones via a scanner.

Terry meets Julie 2013

Screen-print in 3 colours on BFK Rives Limited Edition

‘Terry meets Julie’ every Friday night. Where? Waterloo Sunset.  On an autumn day in 2012 we found that sunset and decided it would make a fine Christmas card.  The response to that card was so positive that I thought that it would make a fine print in its own right. The image you see is a re-imagining of all the places I like to look at from Waterloo Bridge, bringing the Festival Hall and Tower Bridge into new positions, where they can be seen properly!

‘Two Cathedrals’ 2014

Screen-print in 4 colours on Fabriano Tiepolo mould-made paper

Dimensions: Paper H 38cms x W 28cms, Image: H 28cms x 14cms

Limited Edition of 24

This print started out as a Xmas card but I liked the image so much that I enlarged the print size and added some transparent grey to the buildings to accentuate the richness of the colours.  The viewpoint looks along the pedestrian walk to the Millennium Bridge, with Tate Modern, ‘St. Nick’s’ in the distance and St Paul’s shown in reflection on the surface of a giant chrome plated steel ball.

Woke Up, It was a Glasgow Morning 2017

Screenprint in 5 colours on Madrid litho paper Limited Edition of 12
Paper size 50x23 cms, Image size 13x40 cms
A visit to Glasgow in the Autumn of 2017 was the genesis of this little joiner print. Having been mightily impressed by Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum we set of on a walk from the Botanical Gardens and ended up passing the late lamented ‘Mac’ before concluding our walk in Sauchiehall Street. The low morning sunlight playing on the wonderful Glasgow architecture was an inspiration.

‘Tower Sunrise’ 2018

Screen-print in 4 colours on Madrid litho mould-made paper Limited Edition of 12

London Bridges come and go (see ‘London Bridge is falling Down) but Tower Bridge (opened in 1894) has gained emblematic status and looks likely to be with for the long term. George D. Stevenson added the Gothic style to the original design by Sir Horace Jones. Until I took some photographs in the summer of 2018 I had rarely taken the time to look at the Bridge closely thanks to our friends, who were waiting at the bar leaving us waiting outside.
